Write for us!

Want to write for us? We’d love to hear your ideas.

What is Chalk?

Chalk is a new magazine, aiming to amuse and intrigue. Chalk is curious, publishing a selection of feature articles on a range of topics, very loosely themed to explore history and culture. These are complimented by factoids, silly extras, and parodies.

What are we looking for?

The sort of feature articles we want are well-researched, interesting, and fun. They should surprise, make a reader go ‘huh!’, or have a chuckle to themselves. Features should average around 2,500 words but might be more or less depending on the subject. We’d love to read unexpected stories about history, culture, art, music, literature, nature, and UK life in general.

Most of our extras are written by the editorial team, but we would also love to hear ideas for these. Do you have a weird fact that wouldn’t fill a whole feature, but think is still worth the ink? Or, a little satire that pokes fun at pretention and academese?

What are we not looking for?

We are looking for pieces that are timeless – as much as this is possible – and so we are less interested in news or trends. Similarly, Chalk doesn’t want anything too serious.

Who writes for us?

We invite pitches from all writers. Given Chalk’s interest in unusual topics, we are keen to hear from academics and journalists.

We pay all of our contributors for their words.

Pitches should be between 150 and 250 words, and should outline your concept or content.

Please send all pitches to: submissions@chalk-magazine.com
